Doctors want better work-life balance

Think back over the last few weeks and ask yourself what you’ve
done apart from Work. If you are finding that Medicine is taking
over nearly 100% of your life then it’s time to call a halt to your
lifestyle and work out ways to get it to be more balanced.
What does a balanced life mean for you? Maybe your definition is different
from mine. As a doctor you have to come to terms with how busy it can be
working as a doctor. It’s not only the day to day work routine
which has to be completed but also the mental stimulation and
curiosity and the constant need and pressure  to learn  and process
new information.
It’s easy to let other aspects of your life be neglected so that
family and friends, partner, spouse and children may all seem to
fade into the background and be neglected.
If you feel it’s impossible to do something different  and it would be impossible to change the system, I want you to stop right there, take a deep breath and say to yourself ‘It doesn’t have to be that way!’
You can’t change the system directly but you can change yourself. You can change the way you view your life and your situation.
You can step back and look at various aspects of your day as if you were in the cinema watching yourself in a film.
Notice what is happening and the way you behave and ask yourself: ‘Could I have done that differently?’ ‘What am I excluding that I want to have more of in my  life?’
Think about these things and daydream and see what comes into your mind. Write it down. Find out what you discover.
