Have you ever stopped for a moment and thought about how you identify ‘success’?
You may wonder whether to consider ‘success as a doctor,’ ‘success as expected by your family and friends’ or ‘success encompassing your life as a whole’ as defined by you.
You may be living your life to attain one of these meanings of success while really wishing to move to one of the others, or may find that you fluctuate from one to another depending on who you talk to and how you feel at the time.
If you have been focused entirely on your medical work to the detriment of other aspects of your life then perhaps it’s time to become more aware that success can include all aspects of your life, not only Medicine.
Many doctors strive to get to the top of their speciality and yet have an un-fulfilling personal life. You may have been encouraged to neglect your personal interests and direct all of your energy and most of your time to achievement in your chosen speciality only to fond that eventually that might be all you have left in your life.
For many doctors finding a balance between work and the rest of life can be a dilemma and a constant challenge.
But wait, it doesn’t have to be like that. It is possible to start by defining success in relation to what you want for your life. Notice this might be very different from how it is defined for you by your colleagues and trainers. It might also be somewhat different from the way it is defined by your family and friends. However when you define what success means to you then strive to achieve it for yourself your life will change for the better.
Notice how your own definition of success does not have to mean an all or noting approach. You can still be successful in Medicine but on your terms. This might mean adjusting the hours or days you work or the speciality you work in. It might mean living in a different place, learning some new skills, and challenging yourself to make some changes in your work routine.
You may have to give up some but not all of the trappings of a wealthy doctor and notice how you can manage financially on a lower salary if need be.
It takes courage to define your own path but when you do you will begin to have the life you truly want to live.
